The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
